DO I NEED TO INSULATE?

The simple answer is yes.  A wooden structure will naturally contract and expand slightly with climate changes throughout the year.  Your best bet is to start with a structure made from tongue and groove boards (which you did!!)   They offer a water tight, and airtight seal with enough room to accommodate expansion without warping or splitting.  Furthermore, a layer of insulation creates a thermal break and stops the transfer of moisture. By insulating the structure, you could reduce the energy consumption you spend heating it.    In turn, you’ll give off a smaller carbon footprint….and probably get a smaller utility bill in the long run.

WHAT IS R-VALUE?

R-value, or R-Factor, measures how well building insulation can prevent the flow of heat into and out of the home. Higher R-value means greater insulation performance.   The R-value of soft wood, such as spruce and pine, is 1”= 1.41  (or 28mm = 1.41)  To give you some context; an outside wall of a fully finished home is insulated to the R-value between 13-15.

WHAT IS THE R-VALUE OF MY STRUCTURE?

Most of our structures come with 28mm or 40mm wall boards, and 18mm roof and floorboards.  The R-value then of the 28mm wall boards is 1.41, and 2.21 for the 40mm wall boards. The 18mm floor and roof boards is only .71.  Although the boards themselves provide some insulation value, there is definitely opportunity for heat loss.

WHAT DO I DO?

The Floor – Insulating beneath the floorboards helps prevent moisture from creeping in and soaking into the wood floor.   Panels, or insulation with rigid corners, is the best option for creating a complete barrier.  Rigid insulation panels are easily installed between the floor joists, or foundation boards.   PacRim’s floor insulation packages come with 1.5” rigid panels, with an approximate R-value of 6.  The floor insulation packages range in price from $260 – $490 depending on the square footage of your structure.

The Roof – approximately 35% of heat loss goes through the roof.  Insulating between the roof boards and the roof covering with ISO board greatly reduces the amount of heat escaping the structure through the roof.  PacRim’s roof insulation packages come with 3”  ISO boards; an approximate R-value of 16.  Roof felt is added as a vapour barrier.  PacRim’s roof insulation packages begin at $616.
